| | Coalmine, dramatic nature and Faroese saga...
The first stop on our trip is the only working coal mine in the Faroe Island, we will seek out the old natural harbour of Fiskieiði in Hvalba, where people were hiding for pirates in the 17th century. Fiskieidi used to be used as a fishing harbor earlier. Very few boats still use this harbor, and now it is mostly used for leisure.
Driving on to Sandvík, we relive events from the Faroese saga and in Sandvík we visit an old farmhouse called Bóndahúsið uttan Ánna, a charming old house built in 1866 in the old tradtional Faroese way. The house is black and white and has turfed roof. It has never been painted inside. There are many interesting items inside the house.
On the return journey, we stop at Trongisvágur, near the tunnel to Hvalba, where, after a short walk, we can enjoy the dramatic western side of Suðuroy with its magnificent natural scenery and rich bird life. Field glasses are available at Røðini (Rodini/the rows) to enable you to study the bird life more closely. You can also watch the interesting basalt layers of the coastline and its vertical cliffs. | | | | Categories
